- When installing Windows 8 or 8.1, it should automatically extract the key and activate on its own. The ONLY time I have had this not happen is when I installed 8.1 instead of 8, which is what my PC originally came with.
- Make sure you're installing the correct OS. If the product key you're backing up is from a computer that (at first) contained Windows 8, then you need to install Windows 8. It will not accept Win 8.1. In any case the product code is baked into Windows 8 computers and getting that code is rather simple.

Usually, your Windows 8 product key will be with the email you received after buying Windows 8 for download, or if you purchased it in a box with a disc, with the packaging.
